International Lutheran Council
(ILC) "The ILC is a worldwide association of established confessional
Lutheran church bodies which proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ on the basis of an
unconditional commitment to the Holy Scriptures as the inspired and infallible Word of God
and to the Lutheran Confessions contained in the Book of Concord as the true and
faithful exposition of the Word of God. ... The origins of the International Lutheran
Council (ILC) can be traced to a meeting of leaders of confessional Lutheran churches in
Uelzen, Germany in July 1952. A second meeting was held in 1959 in Oakland, California to
discuss the topic "The Fellowship Between our Churches." This was followed in
1963 by a third meeting in Cambridge, England, where the name "International Lutheran
Theological Conference" was chosen for these informal international gatherings.
During the next three decades eleven more informal gatherings of the heads of confessional
Lutheran churches took place. The ILC as a council of church bodies officially came into
existence in 1993 in Antigua, Guatemala with the adoption of a constitution by
representatives from Lutheran church bodies from all six continents." [from the

Lutheran
World Federation The Lutheran World Federation is a global communion of Lutheran
churches, with central offices at the Ecumenical Centre in Geneva, Switzerland. Founded at
Lund, Sweden in 1947, the LWF now has 136 member churches in 76 countries representing
61.7 million of the world's 65.4 million Lutherans.
LWF - North America The LWF has an office to support the work of the Federation in the
member churches in North America. The office is located in the ELCA offices in Chicago.
Numerous synods and conferences abound in the Lutheran world. Many of them belong to
the Lutheran World Federation, but not all. The list below includes both LWF members and
some of those who do not belong to the LWF. This list is by no means exhaustive. If you
have further links to add, please us.

Christianity, we are The Evangelical Community Church - Lutheran, a small denomination
within Lutheranism's Evangelical Catholic Tradition. Our national headquarters and
theological seminary, Wittenberg Lutheran Seminar, are in Kansas City, Missouri, and

"Pastor Kenn Ward, editor of the ELCIC's national magazine, Canada Lutheran from 19912003, has
written the helpful A Guide to the ELCIC.

Canada." [from the website]
Canadian Lutheran World Relief

ELCIC.
Evangelical Lutheran Church of
England (ELCE) "The ELCE is a confessional Lutheran Church and a member of the
International Lutheran Council (ILC) ... Though there are now ELCE congregations in
England, Scotland and Wales - our official name includes 'Church of England' because it is
in London that our synod had its first beginnings in 1896. As a Church Body, the ELCE is
not an ecclesiastical government exercising legislative or coercive powers. The ELCE
carries out powers and responsibilities determined by its member congregations, as set by
their delegates at annual synodical conventions." [from the website]
Evangelical Lutheran Conference &
Ministerium of North America (ELCM) A new church body founded in September 1999 and incorporated in
Pennsylvania. The ELCM describes itself as a "centrist" church body, somewhere
between the liberal positions associated with the ELCA and the conservative stances of the
LCMS & WELS.
Lutheran Church - Canada
(LCC) "The Lutheran ChurchCanada (LCC) was founded in 1988 when
the Canadian congregations of the St. Louis, Missouri-based Lutheran ChurchMissouri Synod formed an autonomous Canadian
church and three districts: The Alberta-British Columbia District, with offices in
Edmonton, Alberta; Central District, with offices in Regina; and East District, with

church bodies around the world which follow the Biblically-based Lutheran Confessions."
Selbständige Evangelisch -
Lutherische Kirche
SELK = Independent Evangelical - Lutheran Church "Die Selbständige Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche (SELK) ist eine
lutherische Bekenntniskirche. Sie ist vom Staat unabhängig und finanziert sich durch
freiwillige Beiträge ihrer Mitglieder. Mittelpunkt ihrer Theologie und Verkündigung ist
das Evangelium von Jesus Christus, wie es in der Bibel steht.
The SELK is an independent church body. It does not recieve subsidies from the state but
rather it finances itself by the offerings of its members. The SELK does have its own
seminary for the education of pastors. This seminary is located in Oberursel, north of
Frankfurt. The SELK also has its own mission society and a couple of institutions to care
for the needy, such as hospitals or nursing homes. The SELK is not a member of the
Lutheran World Federation, because we believe that altar and pulpit fellowship equals
church fellowship. Together with other confessional Lutheran church bodies, the SELK forms
the International Lutheran Council, ILC.
